Light Therapy for Skin: IPL, LED and What the Science Actually Says

Light-based skin treatments have moved well beyond the realm of trends. IPL and LED therapy are now backed by substantial clinical evidence and form part of the treatment toolkit at clinics worldwide — including St James Aesthetics. But they work in very different ways and suit very different skin concerns.
IPL: intense pulsed light
IPL uses broad-spectrum light delivered in high-intensity pulses to target specific chromophores in the skin — primarily melanin (pigment) and haemoglobin (blood). The light energy is absorbed by these targets, converting to heat and destroying the targeted cells or structures without significantly damaging surrounding tissue.
This makes IPL particularly effective for sun damage and pigmentation, visible capillaries and redness, rosacea-related flushing, and overall skin tone irregularity. A course of IPL treatments can produce a noticeably more even, clearer complexion. IPL must be calibrated carefully and is not suitable for all skin tones — assessment by a trained clinician is essential.
LED: low-level light therapy
LED therapy uses specific wavelengths of light at low intensity to trigger cellular responses in the skin without any thermal damage. Red light (around 630-660nm) stimulates fibroblast activity and collagen production; near-infrared light has anti-inflammatory and healing effects; blue light targets acne-causing bacteria at the skin surface.
Unlike IPL, LED is completely painless, requires no recovery time, and is safe across all skin tones. It works best as a supporting treatment — enhancing results when combined with other therapies and providing gentle maintenance between sessions.
Which is right for you?
Choose IPL if your primary concerns are pigmentation, sun damage, redness, or visible capillaries and you have a light-to-medium skin tone.
Choose LED as a complement to other treatments, for gentle ongoing skin maintenance, or if you have sensitive or reactive skin.
Consider both for a comprehensive approach: IPL to address existing damage and LED to support recovery and ongoing skin health.
At St James Aesthetics, our clinicians assess your skin thoroughly before recommending any light-based treatment. Book a skin consultation at our Camberwell, Moonee Ponds, or Geelong clinic to discuss which approach is right for you.
